Breath-Centered Consciousness: The Way of Equanimity describes a method of meditation based on the premise that meditation  isn't something esoteric or mystical.  It's a skill.  And like any other skill, it can be acquired through training.

The training method described in the book is based on a theory that consciousness is by its nature structured with dual points of focus: the anchor-point and the attention-point.  Those meditation instructions that teach us to control attention have missed the point – the anchor-point, that is.

What we pay attention to is not so important to the maintenance of the meditative state as how we pay attention.
